OPNsense Boot Environments - Proof of Concept/ Sneak Preview
🚀 Introducing Boot Environment Integration in OPNsense 🚀
In this video, I demonstrate a groundbreaking feature I've developed for OPNsense, the open-source firewall. Inspired by FreeBSD's boot environments, this new functionality allows users to manage boot environments directly from the OPNsense web interface. Unlike pfSense+, which offers this feature as part of a paid subscription, this integration in OPNsense is (may, if accepted) be available to everyone at no extra cost!
🔧 What You’ll See:
✅ A short proof of concept video showing the new feature in action.
✅ How to manage and switch between boot environments seamlessly within the OPNsense web interface.
✅ The ease and flexibility this feature brings to OPNsense users.
📈 Why This Matters:
✅ Enhances system management and recovery options for all OPNsense users.
✅ Levels the playing field by providing a feature that typically requires a paid subscription in other platforms.
✅ Strengthens OPNsense's position as a leading open-source firewall solution.
✅ Demonstrates the power of open-source software: we can introduce and implement the missing features we need.
🔍 Next Steps:
I plan to submit this code to the OPNsense development team for review. While there's no guarantee it will be accepted, I’m hopeful that this feature will soon become a standard part of OPNsense, benefiting all users.
🎥 About This Channel:
On this channel, I not only provide technical guides and tutorials on OPNsense and other technologies, but I also strive to improve the tools we use by contributing new features and enhancements. This effort is greatly encouraged by the views, subscribers, and loyalty to the channel, which make it possible to give back to the community on such a great scale. Thank you all for your continued support!

It says i need a key
Most of the people here actually want to put it on the left side of the monitor, not on the bottom. There's a util called StartAllBack that does it.
would you recommend me doing this on my gaming pc?
I not a fan of Windows 11, wish I left mine on 10 tbh
@@sheridans I’ll stick to 10 then cheers bud for the honesty
I tried to do this the way you did in the video there was a few issues I came across... first the driver location was F: not E: as it was in your video... second was that I tried to change the name on the shortcut to product server and it also wouldn't let me change it . and when i tried to run it anyway it said that The PC Must support TPM 2.0 - PC must support secure boot.... not sure how that works it is a gaming computer don't know if that makes a difference? But if you can help that would be great
I am confused. When the video started we were using the default boot environment. We created and activated the before_update boot environment prior to fetching and updating FreeBSD. My question is why after the reboot from the update are we not using the 14.0-RELEASE_2024-01-22_083550 boot environment? It would seem to me to reverse the update I would want to return from 14.0-RELEASE_2024-01-22_083550 to before_update. What am I not understanding?
Does it support "port profiles" with Version 8?
why Wan port is not showing in the ifconfig and how resolve it?
Hello, How can i do to expand the capacity if i forgot to check the "expand capacity" when repairing
Dose it works well?
Doesn't work anymore. Authy Desktop can't be found in the official website, and even if you find it somewhere else and install it you can't run it, you will get a "The device does not meet the minimum integrity requirements"
So I've heard 😞
Thanks. I was having issues with downloading p2p with windows 10 pro. Installed 11 as per your instructions and worked. Issues resolved.
Glad it helped, thanks for the feedback

What will you do if the yellow exclamation comes up?
can i mix ssd pool1 with hdd pool2 ?
link doesn't work and can't get to your forums page.
Forums should be fixed, apologies and thanks for pointing that out
WTF with thiis tutorial , no network model, how can we understand what would be setup @@
thanks for the try but none of this works anymore
Follow the instructions, it literally stated what version you should use
@@sheridans Thanks for the video, yep it does not work anymore I guess it shows ""The device does not meet the minimum integrity requirements" popup and prevent me from logging to the app so basically I can't restore my TOTP codes anymore.
@hitashi1805 As mentioned in the video, you need to use the correct version of authy, it doesn't work on the latest needs, an earlier one.
@@sheridans Unfortunately, even the 2.2.3 version can no longer be added to your Authy account. Twilio took the extreme step of de-authorizing the Windows device type, apparently. As noted, once that happens, a Windows device can no longer be used to connect to an Authy account so this path to export from the service is now gone (frustratingly). Your video is/was valid - no criticism from me on that. Thanks for posting this to help those who found it til the last couple of days! (I still gave this a like and subscribed due to your excellent effort here).
wow 😞 thanks for the feedback, and sorry for those affected.
very useful thank you, I managed to get WAN failover to USB tethered phone working 👍
does it still work
Can you have a guide for multi-WAN PPPoE failover with unnumbered IP
Clear straight to the point video. Thanks!
Appreciate you taking the time to say so, thanks for your feedback 🙏
After installation can you unmount the iso drive?
You'll have rebooted so no need
Awesome, ty, I have a freebsd fetish.
"A really quick video" goes for 11+ minutes for something that takes 10 seconds to show. Moreover, that's not what I'm looking for, I want to move the entire taskbar to the left.
For me its asking for the product key and i see no option to not use one
Hi. Educational video but.... Tried this with a 5G/LTE router in bridged mode and then the ip number is locked. It cannot change the ip number when switching without me restarting the router or 5G device. What is this due to?
A few months ago my Ubiquiti Verify app asked for log in verification several times in a span of like 15 minutes. I first checked all my network devices before denying the request. Happened multiple times on two deprecate days. Wouldn’t doubt if there was a data breach somewhere on their servers. Changed my password and all has been smooth.
"ente auth" is a good alternative that has desktop and mobile apps, end to end encryption and easy imports and exports
made by indians
thank you so much sir ! I have just reset my window and looking for window reupdate video like this ! help a lot
Glad it helped 😀
Thank you so much for everything you do to spread information to everyone! Thanks to you, I have successfully upgraded to Win11 and have full access to the context menu! You are a truly awesome person!
Thank you for the kind words 🙏
Thank you for your efforts to help others.
Thank you!
Any downsides of doing it this way if I have supported hardware?
If you have supported hardware, you should be able to do it directly from windows update, or just run the setup as is
Thanks for this video its a great for my upcoming school project :)
I'am running OpenWRT
I haven't used it tbh, maybe I should take a look. Never had a need. Thanks for that 👍
When i rename target location ; after apply pop up shows 'the name specified in the target box is not valid.make sure the path and file name are correct.' Please help!! 😢😢
Have you included the double quotes as instructed in the video?
@@sheridansyes i have included double quotes
You could always run it from an elevated command prompt if struggling with the shortcut
Thanks for your quick feedback and also for the video. There's being a space between double quote and forward SLS. I missed it.That's why this error occur .Now it works. Thanks.
@@bijoyhridoy375 Good job!
Oh my god thank you so much you just earned a subscriber!!!!
I'm glad it was helpful, thank you for the sub, and the feedback!
faking hell, thank you, its so annoying that its default is at the centre
10:00 after this step it’s showing “We can’t tell if your PC has enough space to continue installing Windows Server. Try restarting setup”. I tried it again but it’s still showing me that, I don’t know what to do please help! And I have 100GB left in my C drive.
Unfortunately this can happen when you've got something funky going on woth your partitions, which often requires rebuilding BCD which is beyond the scope of this video. It's also easy to brick your system if you do it wrong.
@@sheridans okay got it, thank you
Sir unable to tick option for Keep files, settings and apps what should i do?
There are only two options available only 1. is Keep Personal Files only and 2. Nothing
There multiple language iso, the one younuse should match your installed system
You can also add multiple VPN interfaces and use a gateway group so incase one goes down it will still work.
Thank you for the video showing the value that OPNsense brings to the table with Free-BSD feedback and also in your comparison! i will admit that I was a previous user of pfSense for many years, but always had various issues. While minimal, they were still a pain. Having moved to to OPNsense, I have been very pleased...so much so that I've purchased Decisio hardware (DEC850). I acknowledge it is way more power than I truly need, but I looked at it as a way to support the project. Thank you again for the informative comparison!
Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback on this, and I'm glad OPNsense is working for you. Using official hardware is also a massive help supporting the project, similarly to those who buy official pfSense hardware help support that. I tried to provide an unbiased opinion and reasons different people might find for using both, from homelab to business. I also tried to defuse some of the misconceptions being thrown around about OPNsense.
what is your hypervisor? xcp-ng? just saw nic driver....
We use XCP-NG cluster for production, and Proxmox for isolated lab environment. This would've been on Proxmox
